Thumb pain from too much texting has become more common in recent years, especially among people who use smartphones often. This problem is sometimes called "BlackBerry thumb," named after the popular device that first brought attention to it.

Surveys show that about 40 percent of frequent texters feel pain or discomfort in their thumbs or wrists. It's not just adults—teens and young adults are at higher risk because they use smartphones a lot.
It happens because texting, swiping, and scrolling put stress on the thumb tendons again and again. The thumb is not as flexible as the fingers. It is not made for these small, repeated movements.
Over time, this strain can lead to inflammation, stiffness, and even more serious conditions like tendonitis or tenosynovitis (De Quervain's syndrome, also known as de Quervain's tenosynovitis).
Common symptoms include aching, tingling, swelling, and less movement in the thumb. Sometimes, the pain can even spread to the wrist or forearm.
How can I relieve texting-related thumb pain?
If your thumbs hurt from too much texting, taking a break—like a week-long "texting vacation"—can help them recover. Invite your friends to join so you're less tempted to keep texting.
Switching from your thumbs to using your index fingers or other fingers can also help reduce strain.
Try using voice-to-text or hands-free options when possible to minimize thumb movement. Gentle stretching exercises for your hands and wrists can relieve tension and improve flexibility.
Applying ice packs or taking over-the-counter anti-inflammatories may reduce swelling if pain persists. Making these small changes can go a long way toward preventing long-term damage.
